RYDA - Rotary Youth Driver Awareness
RYDA is a one day safety programme aimed at 16 to 18-year-old students starting to drive independently, or are travelling as passengers of novice drivers.
For our Timaru District schools, these are conducted at the Levels raceway, supported by 6 Club volunteers, 6 teachers and 7 programme specialists.
Each year over two days, about 200 students attend, encouraged to take greater responsibility for themselves and their friends and focus on the crucial ‘big five’ road safety issues of speeding, DUI, fatigue, seatbelts and distractions as well as the importance of driving as a social responsibility. In small peer groups, they rotate through six interactive sessions :
- Speed and stopping
- Hazards & distractions
- The 'I' in drive
- Road choices
- After the crash
- Genevieve's story
This programme, supported by Rotary in various ways, is delivered to over 50,000 17-18 year old high school students from 650 schools, at 90 venues throughout Australia and New Zealand.
