Jeremy counts everyone crossing the finish line – numbers being important for planning. “Helping on projects like this is just fantastic!” he says. “Being able to give something back to the community I live in, is also loads of fun and you get to meet and work with some very interesting and motivated people.” He adds: “That’s why I like to help out with the H2H. It brings people together in such an friendly and enjoyable way.” About his Rotary Club’s role, he comments: “Rotary projects like this really strengthen our community’s spirit and wellbeing.”
When moving to Timaru in 2000 Jeremy sought out a Rotary Club. “It seemed like a good way to meet a wider group of people”. He explains: “I already had good experiences of Rotary through my father-in-law who was a very active in Ashburton and indeed became a District Governor.” Two decades later, Jeremy’s opportunities and experiences far exceed his initial reasons for joining.
Jeremy is one of six Rotary specially tasked H2H volunteers. Safety is paramount and fortunately we have John Keenan’s assuring road and volunteer management skills. With Jeremy’s help Geoff Cloake tackles the promotional and technical stuff like Prepayments. No guesses on retired accountant Paul Hewiston’s role!
Then sales, wrist-banding and the logistics of transport, start and finish arrangements, etc. need organising. Here Dr Tony O’Brien and Reece Hart excel with their wealth of knowledge and community work. Sponsors, supporters, and benefactors are also involved. Noel Crawford with kind heart and great care for the community, helps in here, keeping everything ticking as event co-ordinator.
