Art Auction to be held by Timaru North Rotary 18 October.

The Rotary Club of Timaru North has long been a supporter of youth in South Canterbury, believing that investment in talented youth is an investment in our future. One of the areas it has particularly focused on is the arts. For many years the club has sponsored the annual Artarama event at Aigantighe Art Gallery which recognises and rewards outstanding school aged artists. In 2017, in an effort to broaden its involvement, the club established an Arts Scholarship to provide an enhanced learning experience for a South Canterbury student commencing or continuing study in an arts field at tertiary level.

The art auction

The auction the club held that year, enabled by notable artists such as Clark Esplin who have kindly donated their art works for sale, was very successful. To date Timaru North Rotary has been able to assist five young aspiring artists to follow their dreams.

On Friday 18 October the club will run another art auction to bolster the scholarship fund. It is looking to the South Canterbury arts community for support, in particular to artists who may wish to donate pieces to be auctioned, and artists who would be interested in having their works auctioned with a reserve, with the Rotary Club retaining any money over and above the reserve for the scholarship fund.

Convenor of the art auction for Timaru North Rotary, Harley Smithson, said he is hoping the public will support the auction by bidding on the artists’ very generous donations and so top up the club’s Art Scholarship fund.
