Bookarama
Dale Davey reported on the Bookarama sale which the club held on 11-13 of this month. She said she appreciated the confidence the club had in her when making her, a relatively new member, convenor this year. She enjoyed the challenge, and thanked the members and non-members who aided her by putting in many hours of work in setting up the sale, and on sale days. A number of young people volunteered during the setting up, and she hoped the enjoyment they would have had doing this work would lead them into further volunteering later in life. Doug Lawrie, who has given his special knowledge of books to Bookarama for many years, Dianne Stewart’s work in setting up the chiildren’s section, and Brosnan Transport for supplying and moving the container, received special thanks.

Dale said the first sale day “was a mad rush… and Saturday and Sunday were not to be sneezed at, with a constant flow of buyers coming through… It seems we raised around $20K before expenses… Thank you all for your input, your encouragement and support. This is a great fundraiser and hopefully will continue for the benefit of our community.” Rod thanked her, saying she was the first person to arrive each day and the last to leave. This was followed by a round of applause from those present for Dale’s efforts in running a very successful Bookarama.
Paul Harris Fellow
A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship award to Trevor Johnson. In the citation, Rod said that since joining in 2013 Trevor has been generous with his time in helping at club activities, and has made a significant contribution by organising the 4W.D. trips into the back-country in recent years. The latest, to Central Otago and Dunedin, was enjoyed by all who went. Trevor’s passion has been farming, and he and Jo have been successful in helping set up their family on dairy farms. In 2004 Trevor won an A.C. Cameron Memorial Award in recognition of his contribution to agriculture.

Three Minute Speaker
Jay Lovely introduced Jan Holden, who spoke in his slot for the three-minute talk. Jan’s topic was Survival in Life. When she was widowed she took the attitude that a strong marriage should not end with the survivor being a sad recluse, and told of a trip she went on to Apia in Samoa, during which she was the target of a scammer who “needed financial support”. Jan quickly recognised the scam for what it was and sent the gentleman on his way.

Toot for Tucker
Rod has been asked by the Lions Club if our members would be able to help with the Toot for Tucker collection on 18 November. More information is to come. Former president of our club, Rob Talbot, who is now a member of the Christchurch Sunrise Rotary Club, has advised Rod that his club is taking orders for Christmas hampers. Rob can be contacted through Rod.

The winner was… and the robbery
The raffle was won by Robbie Jackson. Sergeant David Hewson, assisted by Corporal Colin Clemens, used some well thought out observations on our members’ activities to extract a haul of fines.

Guest Speaker
Jay introduced the main speaker for the evening, Sasha Frame, who works as the community education lead for Hato Hone St John. She joined nine years ago as a community educator, visiting schools to teach children about response to emergencies, such as first aid and how to inform responders to 111 calls. For the trainers, October is “Shocktober”, during which teaching C.P.R. is the focus of their training. Since 2022 Sasha has been in the lead role, and now travels around much of the South Island training educators. Programmes are sponsored by donations and offered to children at no cost. In thanking Sasha, Rod said the scheme was valuable as children take more notice of a person coming in from outside than from their teachers.

In concluding the meeting Rod mentioned the recent birthdays of John Keenan, Liz Hart and Janice Jackson, and wedding anniversaries of Brian and Sue Schimanski, and Colin and Viv Clemens.
