3-Minute Talk
Paul Hewitson who told us about a planned trip to Missouri in the United States that did not happen because of Covid19. The plan was to visit a unique little town called Branson. This place is known as a Country Western Music centre where all the big names of Country Music meet for festivals. Branson is also staunch Republican country with plenty of Anti-Vaccine people.

Guest Speaker
Chairman Reese Hart introduced Evan MacClure who talked to us about Forrest Management. Evan was trained in the NZ Forrest Service then spent time in the NZ Army and after that worked for a US Company dealing with wood and logs. In 1993 Evan set up a company called “Forrest Management” here in Timaru and is involved in all aspects of forestry from planting to harvesting trees, management of clients Forrest’s, buying and selling wood to local processors and mainly exporting wood in log form. The NZ Forrest Industry produces ca 40’000 tons of wood which is mainly exported. Main markets are China, Taiwan, Australia and the United States. There is scope to produce more but the capacity to ship it is limited. Evan explained to us how the Emission trading Scheme works. This is part of the Paris Agreement that New Zealand is part of and the aim is to reduce Carbon Emissions. Planting a forest will give you Carbon Credits. For a forest to be eligible for Carbon Credits it has to be planted in a certain way and have a certain size and the type of trees planted will count for more or less credit. Big industries like Oil Companies will buy land and ask a Forrest Management Company to plant trees in exchange for the Carbon Credits which they then can use to offset against their Carbon producing activity. The use of Wood-Chips to replace coal for industrial boilers is on the rise but big users like Fonterra would have to plant their own forest if they converted all their boilers.
Reese Hart thanked Evan for a very interesting and topical address.
President John closed the meeting reminding members about the coming Science Fair.

Just for a laugh

For her birthday, I took my wife to an orchard and we stood there looking at the trees for half an hour. Not the Apple Watch she was expecting apparently.

I had a fun childhood. My dad used to push me down the hill in old tires. They were Goodyears.

Our computers went down at work today, so we had to do everything manually. It took me twenty minutes to shuffle the cards for Solitaire.

Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will spend a fortune on gear he will only use twice a year.
