Still in Level 2...

Yes, we are still here. Hopefully, Tuesday next week will bring us news of going to Level 1. If we do, we will be back at The Richard Pearce on Thursday, 16 September 2021. Please check your emails on Wednesday next week for confirmation, or not, of our return to our usual meeting place.

Remembering David Slade (by Barrie Payne)

Timaru North Rotary is saddened at the passing of one of our members.

David Slade was one of our longest-serving and most respected members. He was a very special person and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

David had a lifelong interest and love of Rotary and became a member of Timaru North in 1972.  He served as president (twice), and I recall him telling me that he wanted to fill every role in the Club. I am not sure if he did, but David was a most active member and a full participant in life, as well as Rotary.

I am sure that he could have risen to greater heights, as was shown by his early life in America and Australia, but he chose to settle in Timaru with Joy and to raise and enjoy his family.

David was a full participant in life itself. He was, of course, a well-known Timaruvian involved in Real Estate, Timaru Boys High, Council, and many charitable organisations. As a businessman, he had a great philosophy.  That was to always leave something in a deal for the other person and never to take advantage of somebody else’s misfortune.

We have great admiration for his care of others that he showed to all whom he met and the many leadership roles he had in Timaru.  He was always ready to give support to his many friends.

David was the most convivial people person, who always had a smile and encouraging word for all he met. He was one of those people who are larger than life and was a truly inspirational man. He could light up a room with his smile.

David was Joy’s rock, as, of course, she was his, and they achieved so much together as a couple.  They were an inspiration to many of us.  In later years he was Joy’s biggest supporter as she helped to lead Timaru Girls High out of the wilderness.

He will be sadly missed by all that had the pleasure to know him.

Our Club extends our deepest sympathy to Joy and families.
