Nov 09, 2017
On the 09 November 2017 we welcome Jill Harland. Jill's bio follows: I was born in Llandaff, Cardiff, South Wales, but moved to Surrey in England when I was eight years old. I have taught History, Social Studies/ Social Science, Classical Studies, Art History and English both in New Zealand and Australia. More recently I graduated from the University of Otago with a PhD in History that focused on the emigration of Orkney Islanders from northern Scotland to New Zealand, Australia and Canada. I possess a passion for travel, work on my thesis involved spending 12 months in Britain and presenting papers at conferences in Aberdeen, Orkney, Shetland, Vancouver and Malta. Whilst completing my doctorate, I was also employed as both a Teaching Fellow and a Tutor in the Department of Classics at the University of Otago. I am currently Head of History at Timaru Boys’ High School. In this role I teach all senior levels of History in addition to Social Studies for junior students. In January of this year I was very fortunate to have been chosen by the Holocaust Museum of Wellington and Yad Vashem to be one of 25 teachers in New Zealand to be selected for a 3 week visit to Israel to study the Holocaust from a number of perspectives. The visit included 116 hours of lectures and traveling to major historical and cultural sites. I am very much looking forward to discussing and sharing this wonderful adventure with members of the Rotary Club (Timaru North). We will also be joined by the Rotary District Governor - Bruce Cowan, who will speak to club members. |
